Welcome to the August 2011 edition of the Cycling Resource Centre Newsletter. This is the first edition of our new look newsletter which will keep you up to date with the latest publications and research related to utility and recreation cycling in Australia.

Cycling Aspects of Austroads Guides (Aus)

This publication, released by Austroads in March 2011, contains key information relating to the planning, design and traffic management of cycling facilities. It has been produced to ensure that information in the various Austroads guides is easily accessible by practitioners who have a specific interest in cycling issues and facilities. The PDF is free.

Australian Bicycle Network Signage Strategies (Aus)

A number of bicycle network signage strategies produced by state and local government are now publicly available. The following list provides links to signage strategies produced by the Queensland Government, NSW Government, Parramatta City Council, City of Sydney and Brisbane City Council.

Lane Widths on Urban Roads Research Report (Aus)

This report, released by Bicycle Victoria in August 2011, investigates the evidence for determining traffic lane widths. Current Australian guidelines recommend traffic lane widths of 3.5m as standard. This report finds that lanes below 3.5 metres can operate successfully provided that attention is paid to the local circumstances.

Road Safety
National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 (Aus)

The National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 was released on 20 May 2011 by the Australian Transport Council. The strategy is firmly based on Safe System principles and is framed by the guiding vision that no person should be killed or seriously injured on Australia's roads. The strategy presents a 10-year plan to reduce the annual numbers of both deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads by at least 30 per cent.

Road Deaths Australia - 2010 Statistical Summary (Aus)

This report by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport was released in July 2011. It presents annual summaries of data for Australian road fatalities to the period ended December 2010, including cross-tabulations of deaths by age, sex, road user type and jurisdiction.

No Ridiculous Car Trips: Behaviour Change Strategy (EU)

This video provides an overview of a successful behaviour change program by the City of Malmo in Sweden. The program, now in its fourth year, encourages people out of their cars and onto bikes for short journeys.

Edinburgh Innertube Cycleways Map (UK)

The Edinburgh Innertube Cycleways Map was launched in February 2011 and by the start of June, 25,000 copies had been distributed and as many copies again downloaded. The design is inspired by the London Underground and charts Edinburgh's cycleways in a clear, easy-to use map.

Travel time competitiveness of cycling in Sydney (Aus)

This working paper by Richard B Ellison and Stephen Greaves, Institute of Transport and Logistic Studies, University of Sydney was released in March 2011. The analysis suggests that around 20 percent of people could switch totally from cars to bicycles without incurring more than a 20 minute additional increase in travel time on average per day.

Transport for London's Analysis of Cycling Potential (UK)

This report by Transport for London was released in December 2010 and presents the results of analysis carried out to understand the potential for growth in cycle travel. The goal of this analysis was to better understand the nature of this potential, in terms of what type of trips, people and places offer the best opportunity for growth.

Creating a web-based “bikeability” tool (Canada)

The University of British Columbia has developed a bikeability index that has allowed them to identify and map areas more and less conducive to cycling in Vancouver. The university will be assessing the feasibility of developing the tool to allow other municipalities in Canada (and elsewhere) to upload open-access data and convert it into a bikeability map – an online bikeability engine.

Upcoming Conferences and Events

The Cycling Resource Centre now has an easy to access events calendar with a list of upcoming conferences, presentations and seminars.

The Asia Pacific Cycle Congress will be held in Brisbane 18-21 September. The program includes an exciting line-up of international keynote speaker presentations, events, tours and exhibitions as well as the Bike and Lifestyle Show. The APCC will provide a forum for industry networking, developing technical approaches to cycleway planning and discussing strategies for reaching critical velocity in cycling mode share.

The World Cycling Research Forum will follow the APCC on 22-23 September in Brisbane.

Save the date for Bike Futures (October, Melbourne) and the Australian Cycling Conference (January, Adelaide).

Grant Opportunities

Closing soon: The Federal Government's Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) program supports local governments across Australia to increase the number of adults, predominantly not in the paid workforce, engaged in physical activity and healthy eating programs and activities. The NSW Sport and Recreation Participation Program funds projects to increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in sport, recreation or structured physical activity. NSW incorporated, community based not-for-profit organisations and NSW Local Government Authorities can apply for grants from $500-$10,000. Applications close 25 August 2011. >>More
